I was asked to repair and spruce up an old chair.

The back was broken when I got it, and after I glued it together, I cut the chair open to strengthen it.

A few years ago, I decided to learn about sign painting and lettering.

I can do passable work now, but do wish I had more time to practice,

and a few more brushes!

As soon as I started working in the Jeep, it was pretty obvious to me that I was going to need to make my own rear bumper, as the commercially produced ones were far to pricey for me.

I figured that even if I sprang for a new AC-225, I'd be ahead of the game.

I did better than that though, I found an old used AC-225 for $75.

I found a lot of uses for it other than the bumper.

Stick process isn't the prettiest, but it makes for nice strong welds!

I also added a front receiver as well. I cannot get over how wonderful it is to push trailers around with this set up. I was also planning on mounting my winch in a receiver cradle, but I think it will stick out too far. Perhaps I can rework the front bumper to bring the receiver closer to the radiator.

I've wanted a second car for some time now, and my Brother wanted (sort of) to sell his old jeep.

My Dad helped me get it out to the coast, in a motorcycle trailer. Sure beat flat-towing it!

Right now, I'm building a sewing room for a fabric artist. I had some Old Growth Douglas Fir made into some beautiful flooring.

Here's the flooring right after I picked it up. It was pouring, so I took shelter in my carport before delivering it to the job-site.

I figured the best plan would be to build a suite of top hung sliding doors. So that's just what I did. There are four separate tracks in the top jamb, and each door is able to slide past it's neighbour. I used 1/4" tempered glass, in a pattern called "rain". The doors are Douglas Fir, and are still quite blonde. Over the next few months, they'll oxidize to a warm amber hue.
Underneath the landing also makes a convenient place to store things. I'm not sure what I'll put under there, but I know it'll fill up.

After the stairs were up on the landing, I just hooked up another come-along up in the mezzanine, and while keeping the bottom one taught, I lifted up the other end of the stairs.
From underneath, you can see the construction. Christopher Langhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01833801191750877885noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2741694956271873162.post-82875369533249422092013-02-18T08:00:00.000-08:002013-02-18T08:00:04.364-08:00Half Gallon of GlueNow that the siding is on the shop, I figure its about time I get serious, and clean up all the other jobs left to do. I still have some T&G to put up inside, but I figured that I'd build some stairs. I've been going up and down a ladder to access my mezzanine for far too long. I was just going to cut the stringers out, but my Dad convinced me that it would be good practice, and good fun, to build housed stringers. So, I got out the Audel's Guide, and read up on them.

You can see how the gains for the treads, and riser boards are wedge shaped, as there are no nails or screws in the construction, just glue. Lots of glue.
I made up a simple jig for these stairs. I just used some 1/2" Baltic Birch I had laying around the shop. Making the template was the work of a few minutes, after I came to the conclusion that no matter what, nice stairs take up allot of room. I ended up with a rise of about 7 3/16" & an 11" tread. This worked out nicely using nominal 2"x12" for the treads. The stringers are actually shorts, (just 13") left over from a million board foot run of Belgium Roof Trusses. I got them cheap, and have been hanging onto them for a few years, for just this job!
The treads go into the stringers first. Then the wedges will be dipped in glue, pounded in, and cut off, as the riser boards pass by them.
I finally nailed the siding boards onto the shop. I have to admit, it was great fun pounding the nails in.

I also cleaned the gutters on the way by.
Hanging the siding up on the short back wall was great, I didn't even have to stand on a stool, as the wall is only about 6' high. The grade here, is about 4' higher than the slab inside.
Often I do fill in jobs, and just about the only thing I use, is the mighty worm drive Skilsaw.

Because the homeowners wanted the treads to be made of deck boards, I decided to just place the stringers on 16" centres, so there wasn't any bounce. I used Fir for the stringers, for strength.

I did this job just down the street from my place. The stairs aren't comfortable for walking up and down, but they are great for sitting on, and holding planters. Its just what they wanted, so it's just what they got!
I notched out the bottom of the stringers, to fit over a 2"x3" I shot onto the footing with the Hilti gun.Christopher Langhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01833801191750877885noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2741694956271873162.post-17828306477244387492013-02-15T21:45:00.000-08:002013-02-15T21:45:12.813-08:00And that's Why

I didn't. As great as this looks, it looks even better when compared to what was there before!

I had the Sapele Plywood laid up with the veneer backwards, going across the sheets instead of going lengthwise. This let me build the long doors without joints, or without having to hammer veneer them afterwards.
I like to use 3/4"ply for my case work. In this instance, its Birch, which is nice and hard, and gives a dramatic contrast to the Sapele.I also like to use inserts for the shelf pins!
Instead of a 5" dead space next to the double ovens, I put in a slide out pantry. Sure is more useful than nothing!

The countertop here is made of solid lumber, not ply. The solid stock gives a much better feel when you knock on it, and its much easier to refinish! The ribbon grain always looks a little more vibrant on solid wood than the plywood too.
Unfortunately I found that I need to replace the connecting rod bearings.

I did get full value on the bearings though! In fact, there aren't any bearings left.

Where there is copper here, there should be babbitt, the actual bearing surface has worn away.

No need to replace parts until they are fully worn out!

This was pretty close to a catastrophic failure though.

The shop bus, is a 1949 GMC Panel Truck in case you're wondering. It was converted into a Suburban, during the 50s, with steel, and lead. My how there is lead around the windows. Excellent. For the mean time, I'm on the bike.
The house isn't plumb, level, or square. But it is right on the ocean, hard to beat that. It's also great to ride on the ferry on the way to the job site.
A trifle un-fashionable these days, this is the way I like to build my casework. Dados and grooves. I also refuse to build casework from particle board. I just can't see going to all this trouble to end up with something that won't stand up in the long run. I also find it easier to mount slides, and drawers this way too, not to mention the strength! For fancy work, it also allows an easy install for a dust shield.
With the extra framework, and the ply, it's no trouble to cut out the corners, and still handle the "boxes" without damage. Here, the entire back corner had to be removed for the post. The box is still able to be handled without fear of breaking or racking.
This Emmerich block plane, was the first all wooden plane added to my toolbox. The body is hornbeam, and the sole, lignam vitae. I bought this when I was working on a job outside during the winter, fitting boards on a boat deck. My iron block plane was oh-so cold to hold. This is the first job I used the plane on.
Now of course, I enjoyed using the E.C.E block plane so much that it's no longer alone. In fact, I've switched entirely to German planes, and the Stanley's just collect dust.

It seems that some German carpentry apprentices, still are real journeymen. They actually take a journey. Here in Canada, to get a journeyman's ticket, you either apprentice for four years and write an exam, or work the required number of hours, and then write the exam. German apprentices though, seem to have the option of making the actual journey still. Travelling from town to town, working, and getting a stamp in each place. This journey can take three years and one day, all the while staying at least 50 km from home. During these years, the apprentices aren't allowed to pay for food or lodging, start with only 5 euros, and are expected to finish with 5 euros. Traveling is done by foot, hitch hiking, or by work trade. One wouldn't think that you'd get to far afield, and yet by trading work for ship passage, or working on the ship, traveling the world isn't too much of a problem. To make the journey easier (at least in europe) the apprentices are required to wear the traditional costume. Wait a minute, you may as well read about this on wikipedia.
